Welcome to First Unitarian Universalist Church of Berks County!

Our inclusive religious community welcomes individuals with diverse spiritualities. Our shared values include the use of reason in matters of faith, freedom from dogma and fundamentalism in religion, commitment to lifelong spiritual growth, and engagement in social justice. We live our faith through acts of compassion and justice, believing the world can be transformed by love. Our community has been a liberal religious presence in downtown Reading, PA, since 1832.

April 29 The Ethics of Food

Rev. Sandra Fees, Elizabeth Kaufmann, Director of Religious Education, and Susan Pena, Pianist

We are increasingly aware that our food choices – what we eat, where it comes from, who grows it, who benefits from it – present ethical challenges. Ethical eating and environmental justice call on us to be mindful of these choices and their implications for the planet and society.

May 6 Intergenerational RE Service: Hide and Seek with God

Elizabeth Kaufmann, Director of Religious Education

Come to church early for a special Pancake Breakfast starting at 9:15 am in the Gerber Room.  Come for the pancakes, stay for the fun and worship as we celebrate the experiences we’ve shared in RE this year.  The choir will perform special music.

Come for the pancakes (see above), stay for the fun, worship, and special music as we celebrate the experiences we’ve shared in RE this year, exploring the many different faces of the divine. We will also have a bridging ceremony for high school senior Alison Lashinsky.

May 13 Mad Men/Mad Women: Part I

Elizabeth Kaufmann, Director of Religious Education, Rev. Sandra Fees, Lisa Frank, Worship Associate, and Tracy Blunt, Music Director

The term “feminine mystique” was introduced by Betty Friedan in her landmark book by that title. This morning, we’ll consider how far we’ve come since the sixties in our gender roles – looking at the hit series Mad Men for insight. What, if any, are the contemporary mystiques surrounding women and mothers? On June 17, we’ll revisit the masculine mystique in Part II.
May 20 World Wisdom

Rev. Sandra Fees, Matt Owen, Worship Associate, Tracy Blunt, Music Director, and UU Berks Choir

Included in our Unitarian Universalist sources is “wisdom from the world’s religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life.” What is the nature of wisdom and how can we become wisdom holders? The morning’s offering will benefit a local charity, and new members will be officially welcomed.
May 27 A Day of Freedom?
Rev. Sandra Fees and Nelson Simonson, Worship Associate
Memorial Day has historic roots as a day of freedom. We’ll examine those roots and reflect on whether it’s possible to reconcile the present-day sacrifices and atrocities resulting from war with the cause of liberation.
